I also fall in the middle of this-I think children should be given reason for things. However, children can't take care of themselves so I think they to some extend just have to obey adults.
I think the example parents/adults set is also very important.
However, even as an adult I have noticed I am more likely to do something if I see a reason for it.

I think the example parents/adults set is also very important. However, even as an adult I have noticed I am more likely to do something if I see a reason for it. Even though I was given reasons for having to do or not do something, it didn't mean that the matter was open to negotiation, at least not until I was older. Even if I didn't agree with the reason, I understood that there WAS a reason. I agree that the examples that parents/adults set carry a lot more weight and credibility than the old "do as I say, not as I do".
