Has anyone here had a hysterectomy? It looks like I'm going to get it all taken out pretty soon and I'd love some advice.

I have not had a hysterectomy but I know they can take the ovaries out or leave them in-I know people that have done it both ways. People who have had them taken out when they are worried about Ovarian cancer but I think it pushes menopause.
You might want to research the pros and cons of taking the ovaries out.

CNU, my Dr. has decided to take out my left ovary (since it's wrapped in scar tissue and attached to my pelvic wall) and leave my right ovary in for hormones. He said he will closely monitor my progress after surgery and that it's very important to get yearly exams, even though I'll only have the one ovary left. Frankly, I would rather see how the ovary does than just have it taken out. Menopause doesn't scare me, but I would rather put it off as long as I can.

I had a total hysterectomy May 28th 2008 (ovaries, cervix and uterus all out - instant menopause), and all I can say is wish I'd been able to get it dun a world of a lot sooner (but gyn wouldn't do one on a girl under 30 without good medical reason to do it).
It was easy for me, I went in being diabetic I was the first one of the day for my gyn to do the op on, sailed though it without complications. Drove home the next morning without the need for medication of any kind was back working two weeks later, though I was doing light work 72 hours after the op.
I had one hot flash while in hospital and that was it, my body just continued on as normal it seems not noticing that it was now missing something ::chuckles:: no drop in sex drive what so ever, wish it would have kicked it into gear, but that was asking to much. I am not on medical HRT, but I am taking a natural form of HRT and its helped to get things more into line then I've ever had in my life (aka till I started the herbal HRT i was dry down below and this was before I had the op).

I lose a lot of blood and the pain can be so bad that I can't even stand upright without feeling dizzy. I always feel weak and lethargic during my periods. My uterus has caused me nothing but pain and agony, so I wouldn't miss it. I'm worried about the hormonal changes though, not to mention that it's very invasive surgery that many doctors would refuse to perform on a 17 year old girl.

mei ~ tthere is no need for you to have such discomfort. Go to your doctor and explain your problem. There are meds you can take that should help you immensily. Good luck.
