My husband's parents were poor. My husband's father passed away. His mother lives in low-income housing. They had a lot of problems and my husband grew up on welfare. My mother-in-law though having low income fortunately has some assets.
We have not had to support them but they have not been able to help us financially either.
My only suggestion is that you father-in-law should find out what low income programs he might be eligible for.

Father in law should probably declare bankruptcy to clear his debt. He will be able to keep a house and car. If he's disabled, get him Social Security disability (assuming you're in U.S.). If not disabled legally, he is nearly eligible for Social Security benefits (66) and I forget what year it is for Medicare now, but he should be close for that. Medicare will pay for nursing home once he qualifies.

I agree-it is definately harder to take care of parents with children. In fact, I often notice people with children need help from older parents.
My parents are in their eighties and still live on their own but they are having more health problems. I am very glad I am not "sandwiched" between children and older parents.
