According to this woman MD in the article below: www.lhj.com/health/news/health-advice-from-top-doctors/?page=485 percent of US pregnancies are unplanned. I was truly shocked though I have seen some statistics from other countries where it they show that 2/3 of pregnancies end in abortion. Though I know many people who do want children, it seems like most children may be "unexpected blessings" and probably it is not nice to say they are unplanned.

I'm not surprised that a large number of pregnancies are unplanned but I had no idea it was that many. With all the reliable birth control options now available, I'd sure like to know why most pregnancies are accidental.

I agree with you. That is one reason I am so surprised abortion rates are so high in some countries. You think the birth control would be better.

To answer my own question--there are plenty of reliable birth control methods available at least in the U.S., but they must be used correctly and consistently in order to prevent pregnancies. Obviously, they either aren't using BC at all or not using it correctly and consistently.

Yay abstinence education! Oh yeah! Ignorance is always a good thing.

I don't think it was always this bad, and i do think abstinence education is partially the cause since the only preventative they teach is not having sex the last few years in many schools. they should be getting birth control education. There are teens who don't even know birth control pills etc. exist. I think it's a crime against women.
Also, if any of you are paying attention to the news right now, there is a "War on Women" to remove funding from great organizations that promote birth control, such as Planned Parenthood. It is a Republican initiative meant to put pressure on Planned Parenthood to stop also counseling on abortion, which is only done less than 5 percent of the time. They make it sound like that's all PP does, but that is not true. PP is a friend to women. You should all write your congressmen about it. If you Twitter someone like NOW or Take Action, you will likely receive easy petitions to sign by clicking a box on that subject and many more.

It's not just that they only teach abstinence, they insist that other forms of birth control are ineffectual and even harmful.

It's not just that they only teach abstinence, they insist that other forms of birth control are ineffectual and even harmful. I know. And I think it's criminal. I was born in the early 1950s and grew up in the 60s in the midst of the sexual revolution. I really thought that after that, the backwards ideas regarding sexual matters would finally die out once and for all. Unfortunately, they seem to be coming back with a vengeance. I kept my very liberal views once I got older, and actually have become even more liberal as I have aged, but unfortunately I don't think this is true for many of my generation. And many of the generation after mine seem to have reverted to even more backwards, ultraconservative ideas. I don't understand it.

I agree with both of you. I never dreamed we could go backwards. I recently wrote 3 senators telling them women won't sit still for going backwards, but the truth is citizens of the US are too comfortable and complacent to even care about changing laws most of the time. I think abortion is the ultimate personal/religious issue, but I think more important than whatever beliefs anyone has about it, the bigger concern is taking a step that allows MEN to dictate what women do with their bodies -- and if it's still in there, it's THEIRS, not some man's just because he knocked her up. If we continue to backslide there are lots of men's groups out there ready to make it illegal for women to make their own birth control choices, adoption choices, etc.
I heard someone on Joy Behar the other day say we have to be licensed to drive a car but not to have children -- and I know the Constitution throws up all kinds of impediments to legislating that, but the Supreme Court seems to have no problem legislating against women's control over their own bodies whenever they get a Republican majority.
You know, the most cogent point I've heard made about Republican's current stance on abortion and also cutting back all the women's social programs is that they only care about the child while it's in the womb. After that, they're on their own: They want no housing benefits, want to terminate WIC, that feeds low income women and children, don't care if teens get trapped by a pregnancy because it's more important they don't have sex than they have a baby, don't care if the foster program becomes even more overloaded and inadequate, and doesn't believe in supporting educational programs dealing with these issues. I just can't believe we are allowing this fringe element of fundamentalist thinking get elected over and over. There are NOT that many people out there who agree with them, but those who do are organized through the church and send them tons of election compaign money. It's appalling. If they do not effect a good election campaign reform, NOTHING is going to change. Why are religious outfits allowed to even contribute and campaign when there's separation of church and state??
