There's a story (above) in the news that HLN tweeted, so I sent them a comment, which they must have published, because I got a response to it from a stranger. Anyway, my comment was why were women breastfeeding in public to begin with and breastfeeding mothers, when asked why they didn't do it in the restroom, used "unsanitary" as an excuse but thought nothing of bringing incontinent babies into restaurants and putting them in grocery carts and contaminating foods with e-coli.
Of course, I'm all for breastfeeding. I just think like going to the restroom, it should be done in private or only around close family or close friends. This story is about those women who won't wean their kids.
Another story: I was at a hospital last week and there was a mother with about a two-year-old in the waiting area. I felt sorry for her because this kid was in full-tilt tantrum meltdown. He was old enough to be able to stand up and walk but basically still babyish, but very coordinated. She tried and tried to calm him. He kept grabbing at her, and I'm pretty sure it may have been because he was trying to breastfeed and she wasn't going to let him in public. Anyway, he got so angry he began hitting her really hard, just whaling on her, and she grabbed both his arms and hissed at him to stop but he didn't, and she took two fingers and whapped one of his hands. Then this stranger, probably in her 30s, came up and screamed at the woman for beating her child and just humiliated her to death and told her she should never have had kids. The poor woman's only response was "He was hitting me!" She wasn't a boisterous lady or mean looking, the mom, and I thought that other lady was overreacting. Then security came and everyone was asking the two women and the ladies at the waiting room window questions. I finally got up and said I'd seen everything and supported the mother on it, for which she was grateful. I mean, all she was doing was not letting the kid hit on her and trying to calm him down. I bet that whole thing was about him wanting to breastfeed. Maybe she was already trying to wean him or something. He certainly didn't seem sick, because he was too strong, so she was probably sick. This was in the emergency room. They left her alone after I spoke up, so I'm glad I did it. I hate child abuse, so I thought it through before I did it. I hope it was the right thing to do. She just didn't seem aggressive enough or full of rage or anything. She seemed pretty controlled, so I think I was right.
