Chelsea Handler, host of "Chelsea Lately" again talked about childfree issues last night. She cited some statistics that more women who were college graduates between the ages of 30-something and 45 didn't have children. I can't find the exact statistic she used, but the percentage was getting rather large. Her panel was saying it was because of career, but Chelsea disagreed that's all it was about. She went on just like one of us about how not everyone LIKES kids all that much. I'm proud of her for openly talking about the subject. She doesn't mince any words.

Apparently the perception of why woman are childfree hasn't changed in 30 years. When I was young and told anyone that I didn't want children, it was generally assumed that I felt that way because I wanted to put all my time and energy into pursuing a career. Nothing could have been further from the truth. I didn't want a career. I just didn't want children because the whole idea of motherhood didn't appeal to me on any level. Sometimes even people who like children very much aren't interested in having any of their own for various reasons.

I know! People just refuse to believe all women don't want children! And if they don't, it HAS to be because of career. I mean, I only hate kids in restaurants. I don't hate all kids. Depends on the parent, really. But it's a huge responsibility and it forces you down one path and one path only.

I discovered I still had the Chelsea on video. Her stats said between ages 33-46 of college grads, 43 percent had not had children. That's a pretty big percentage. Of course, it's only the college grads, though.

A line on Chelsea Lately last week: "Babyproofed my house yesterday. That should keep them away for awhile."
Heehee!

I'm nurturing with animals, but I don't call that "maternal".

I can see that, but I really am maternal with them. I love animals so much that I feel like protective of all of them and I also have an entire language I babytalk them with. I've been that way since I was born.

Also as more women work for necessity not by choice I think CF goes up. Who wants to take care of a babby after a stressful job?

More childfree discussion on Chelsea a few nights ago. Gloria Steinham was the guest. Chelsea had met her and other women at an honor/award dinner recently. Chelsea said Ariana Huffington told Chelsea, "Oh, no, you DO want to have children." Chelsea said, "No, I DON'T!" and she just kept haranguing her about it. Then she ran into Gloria Steinham who supported her on the subject and told her, "I've been very happy without children."
