I got away for two nights the first of this week. Went to Hill Country, between Austin and San Antonio, in Wimberely. Nice place to stay there, with 5 cottages, and the beautiful part is most of them are pretty much too small for anything but a very small family. We were right on the edge of the cliff overlooking the river/creek, where tall trees soared high above and far below. That creek has cabins belonging to different landlords all up and down it, so they have divided the creek into sections and have "keep out" signs, which i love because this cabins part of the creek is the best swimming hole in the immediate area and everyone tries to squat there. In fact, a couple of fathers with boys came over the line right when I was leaving. The landlord isn't on site, but if I'd been staying, I'd have tried to run them off.
I love that kids get to go out and have fun doing nature things, but I don't like being around them in the water because so many of them are needlessly splashing and yelling and their stupid parents won't teach them any manners.
The cabins are dog-friendly and come with a dog bed and towels and a comforter to cover the couch for the dog and treats and toys. Very sweet. That part of the country is more pet-friendly than most now. Back when I was a kid, in the 60s, most hotels accepted pets. People always traveled on vacations with their pets. There were no pet sitters and not much boarding. I hate that that has changed so much, but the Austin area is friendly for pets. It's really lovely up there. i wish i could afford to move out that way because it's a 4-5 hour drive from Dallas. I have made it many times in one day just to get in some cold clear water, because there sure isn't any around here.
Hope you all find a time to get away this summer. I usually try to go before kids get out of school, but to go to the water in Hill Country, which is on an aquifer and very cold, you need the hot weather or you'd go numb. Trust me, I've tried going in May. Not a good idea!
