A girl at work has occasionally brought her kids to the office for a visit. One of them is probably quite sweet, but her voice is so loud you can hear it from one end of the place to the other. She was never told to lower her voice. So she yells everything and also, being at a certain age, screams a lot for no reason and about everything, good things or bad.
Anyway, you can always tell when she's there before she even comes in the door. But she hadn't been much lately. Then one day I heard her -- her mother was carrying around a laptop and was Skyping her in. So now, pretty much every day, we can hear this kid screaming and carrying on, even though she isn't there. And she takes it around to her friends and has them all talk to her.
It's just something new for employers to have to deal with every day. Do we stop people from texting all day long on their own phones? Do we stop them from Skyping, which also disrupts everyone else? They're in a lose/lose situation.

I wonder how long it would take to get Skype banned if I taped my barking dogs and played THAT at the office. But kids is such a touchy subject that I wonder if anyone will ever say anything about it.

That is not acceptable in any workplace. How are you supposed to get any work done with such an annoyance. I think I would let it be known that it interfers with your job.

How can something like that--or anything that disrupts or disturbs people's work--be acceptable in any workplace?

Because no one dares say anything to anyone about their damn children. It's political correctness taken to a fault.

I agree-one woman brought in a child for much of the summer. While her child was quiet and she did stop bringing her child in I still felt it was not appropriate to use a work place for day care.

That's just so wrong. I mean, think about it. When the school makes you come pick your kid up, it's either because they've done something heinous -- but usually because they're SICK -- and then they think nothing of bringing them right on in and infecting everyone.
