I just came across some alarming but thought provoking statistics on Nationmaster about the number of years a person on average could face in ill health (by country). Apparently, although women tend to outlive men, they often spend more years ill/handicapped/etc. then men do before they die. This also means that those of us here who are female especially need to make contingency plans for our older years. Here's a few highlights... United StatesMale Years Ill 8 / Life Expectancy at Birth 75.15 years Female Years Ill 10.7 / Life Expectancy at Birth 80.97 CanadaMale Years Ill 8.4 years / Life Expectancy at Birth 76.98 years Female Years Ill 10.4 years / Life Expectancy at Birth 83.86 years United KingdomMale Years Ill 6.6 years / Life Expectancy at Birth 76.23 years Female Years Ill 9 years / Life Expectancy at Birth 81.3 years New Zealand Male Years Ill 6.9 years / Life Expectancy at Birth 75.97 years Female Years Ill 9.4 years / Life Expectancy at Birth 82.08 years JapanMale Years Ill 6.5 years / Life Expectancy at Birth 78.67 years Female Years Ill 8.9 years / Life Expectancy at Birth 85.56 years Statistics from:Female Statistics on Years Spent in Ill Health Around the WorldMale Statistics on Years Spent in Ill Health Around the WorldLife Expectancy at Birth Around the World: MaleLife Expectancy at Birth Around the World: Female
