My mother used to joke that she was the only woman known to have given birth to an adult. She used to tell me that as a child I rarely acted like one and didn't like "kid" things at all, and that having me around was like having another adult around. I do remember that I generally didn't like the things most kids of the time liked, and that the behaviour of most kids disgusted me. I was very quiet and very much into books and reading. I remember that I liked the Barbie dolls because they portrayed a glamourous adult, but I didn't like baby dolls at all and NEVER played at being "mommy". And I was very much into everything reptilian, even then. Back then reptiles were not an "acceptable" thing for a little girl to like and be interested in, and my interest was discouraged. I even had a land tortoise as a pet, which I raised as a hatchling and which is still in the family almost 50 years later. I gave it to my brother when I moved into an apartment. The downside to being the way I was, was that I never fit in with my peers which made life difficult to put it mildly. Wow.... You just perfectly described my childhood.  Even the reptile part (I never owned any though.... It was highly discouraged by my mother, who is scared of all things scaly and slimy.  I was partial to snakes and most lizards). I grew up in a military family and was always either with my mom (who talked to me like I was an adult and had me reading/writing long before I was in school) and the guys from the base were always around. I never hung out with kids my age much at all, and when I did I was rarely interested in anything they were doing. I played with Barbies (but NO dolls!  ) too, but most of the reason I asked for them is I wanted the things they came with, like the play houses and the cars (My GI Joe saw way more of that Lamborghini then Barbie ever did!  ). I was mostly content to read/write/color, and listen to my books on tape. Oh, and play with my Easy Bake Oven; I was all for having brownies whenever I wanted! ;D The odd thing is, though, I wound up kind of fitting in in high school. I went through the whole "trying to be popular" thing in middle school, but I couldn't give up my true interests (like reading, writing, animals, science, computers, researching everything) and was ridiculed constantly for it.  Then between middle school and high school, I became the realist I am today. lol I pretty much decided that most people are sh*t and that I didn't give a crap what anyone thought of me. And somehow, that made me outrageously popular in high school. Of course by that point, I just found it annoying. lol |

It seems that many didn't like things that are meant for kids - this makes me wonder, did anyone despise kids' clothing? I know I did. I couldn't stand t-shirts with cartoony faces, and don't get me started on little girls' dresses. I couldn't wait to wear high heels, makeup and dark colours.  |

Oh I despised all that little girl clothing I had to wear...all those frilly, fussy little dresses that stopped just short of your butt and made you look like Shirley Temple! I was very small for my age until I was a teen, so I feel like I had to wear that stuff forever! I wanted to wear black, deep purples, burgundies, chinese reds, and grays instead of all that pastel candy colored stuff. |

I didn't like girly colors or clothes much either when I was a kid. But I didn't have a whole lot of clothes, and my mom made most of what I had, and it was mainly pretty sensible fabrics, geometric prints or something not too frilly. But now that I'm old, I love girly things.

I suspected I didn't want kids by around age 6 when I would be in the grocery store with my mom, and I'd see these disgusting-looking, overweight young women in stretch pants with three or four stairstep kids. The kids would be bored and whining and the mom would be miserable and yelling and slapping the kids around, and I'd think no, this is not what I want to be.
When I was ten, I went to a sleepover at a girlfriend's house. Her toddler baby sister would NOT leave me alone and it drove me straight up the wall. the final straw was when I was awakened at 6 am by said toddler, who was sitting on my brand-new sleeping bag smearing disgusting chewed-up Oreos all over it. I got up, packed all my stuff, and walked out. On the way home - and I still remember what part of the street I was on - I said aloud to myself: "I am never having kids." I am going to be 46 on Tuesday and I remain CF with absolutely NO regrets.

I HATED the clothes and the shoes I had to wear as a child. To make matters worse, I was extremely small for my age until my teens so I was stuck wearing that s--- for way too long. It was humiliating. I never did like dark colors though, and to this day I prefer brights and pastels. |

My husband was always called a little adult. I also did not like children's clothing and was not into children's games.
I did play with dolls. However, when I lost interest in certain toys at 12 I just had them all thrown out.

It's so interesting that so many CF people were "little adults". My husband and I were little old people too.
I did have 2 life-sized baby dolls that I really liked, and I played with them a lot, but they were never my babies. They were drummers in my "band" and I lugged them around on my "Harley" tricycle.
I also never had any desire to play house and I used my toy kitchen as a pretend chemistry lab.

It's so interesting that so many CF people were "little adults". It is interesting to learn that. All these years I thought that it was "just me" who never acted like the typical kid/adolescent when growing up and I felt like some kind of freak because of it. |

I love this! I'm pretty sure I didn't even like kids when I was a kid. Around age 7 or 8, I had 4 cabbage patch kids and I remember my mom saying that I was their mommy. I turned to her and stated that I was not their mommy, I was their aunt.
