LOL @ Starling!
I've spent quite a bit of time in Jersey, mostly in the Cherry Hill area. Nice part of the state there, but Newark sucks!

I grew up in the NY Metro area (Jersey City, Secaucus, and Bayonne, NJ) so I've been in your neck of the woods a bit, Starling! (Especially eating vast quantities of bridies and other Scottish food in Kearney.)

i live in Rhode Island currently. But I am sick of New England, bad winters, annoying people (especially red sox and pats fans), and not much going on.
we are debating our move from here....would love to live in NYC....or maybe Dallas

C'mon down. You can get a nice comfy 3-bedroom ranch house for $150K in Texas. If you're a nature lover at all, Austin might be better. It's surrounded by good water and nature stuff. And still a pretty big urban town with good restaurants.

Right now we are in CT and headed to GA to the submarine base there this spring. We both are originally from Chicago.

I live in a suburb about 20 miles west of Chicago. We have the kind of weather that you need a winter coat in the morning and by afternoon it's 65 degrees particularly during September and October. When I left for work this morning it was 35 degrees, now it's about 60. Next week the highs are only going to be in the 40's. I love this time of year, but we do have a tendency to get very humid during the summer months, and the temperatures are very up and down.

Every time I've driven around Chicago, I've found myself lost in the center of town. There appears to be no signs on the interstate telling me I was supposed to exit to stay on the road I'm on. I've heard other travellers tell similar tales. Does Chicago have some sort of road trap to snag unsuspecting motorists?

It's extremely confusing. I've lived here all of my life and I avoid downtown. It's confusing and one wrong turn and you could end up in a not so nice area. I know what you mean, though. Driving to areas away from the city is just as confusing. I can't tell you how many times someone driving with me would say, "Stay on this road...get off on this one..., etc. Our roads change names depending on what town you're in, too. Route 83 is just Route 83, unless you go farther north, then it's Kingery Highway. It's extremely confusing especially when you aren't from here; not good for someone like me who couldn't find their way out of a paper bag.

I'm in Louisville, KY. I'm originally from a small town in Indiana that most people have never heard of. (Linton)
I've lived in IN, MI and KY. All have their good and bad points...but this is home for the foreseeable future.

Thanks Preraph! KY is beautiful, especially this time of year. I hate the hot summers, but I love the autumn leaves.

I'm from Madison, WI. I have also lived in Freiburg, Germany and St Louis, MO, but always returned to Madtown because there's no place like home.
This is a great place. It's beautiful, at least the inner city is (the edges have become sprawl hell) with old houses, two lakes, the Arboretum and the University. Lots of parks, bike trails, neighborhood festivals, funky neighborhoods (Williamson Street is hippie central) and fantastic clubs and restaurants. The state Capitol building is truly magnificent. Lots of sporting events too if you love college football/basketball/hockey. A free zoo that has been renovated so that the animals have decent habitats. Plus, you don't have to go very far before you are in rural Dane County, which is gorgeous too.
OK, there are a few downsides, like drunk college kids, high property taxes and of course the winters. I don't mind, I'm used to it and a cold-weather person anyway, but we have just had 2 blizzards 2 days apart and the streets are a mess. People are skiing to work, I am not joking.
Freiburg is beautiful too, and very old - a medieval city. It is the German Madison and is, in fact, our sister city. It's off the beaten track so if you go to Germany check it out, it's on the edge of the Black Forest and right next to Switzerland and France.
St Louis, well, let's just say it's a fun place to visit because it's also old and has a lot of good music venues and historic/cultural things, but I didn't much care for the crime and the climate - way too hot in the summer. A couple of good places to check out are the Delmar Loop in University City, Lacledes Landing and Union Station. The arch is weird and scifi looking but you gotta do it once!
I've also spent a lot of time in Marquette, MI, due to family having a camp there on Lake Superior, which is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

I'm from Oklahoma, born and raised. It's boring and cold right now - and when any form of rain/sleet/snow/whatever starts to fall, everyone forgets how to drive. I literally was stuck behind a huge SUV going 35 in a 50 with no way to pass. What was going on with that driver? Yeah, the woman was messing with her baby in the back seat. I'm staying in for the weekend with my husband, animals and a bottle of tequila.

I live in eastern Connecticut, not far from the Massachusetts border, and five minutes from the UCONN Storrs campus. I grew up here and in the Bronx.

I'm from Toronto, Canada. Lived in Southern Ontario most of my life, but decided to pick up and move to Orlando, FL when I was 20. All by myself. Well...sort of Lived there 3 years and had to move back home because I couldn't finish school down there (your out of state tuition is a killer in the US!!!) and I hadn't seen my parents for 2 years (I couldn't go home do to "immigration rules" unless I had permission...they gave it to me once and didn't again...stupid! --sorry...ranting a bit). Anyways, I'm back in the GTA (greater Toronto area for those of you who don't live in Canada!). I've experienced the 4 seasons and the "mostly summery weather" and I think I'd rather live in the warm weather and plan trips to go in snowy weather for christmas and ski trips, then deal with the bitter cold for a few months of the year. I have to say, those of you who live in California are SO lucky! If I could move there I would..it's just so incredibly hard for us Canadians to live in the US unless we have immediate family there.....sigh. Guess I'm stuck in the cold!
