After listening to everyone tell me that no doctor in the world would perform a vasectomy on a 29 year old unmarried male, I have taken the first steps of finding one who is sympathetic to my decision to remain child-free. This thread is more for myself, to record my experiences and struggles with this search, hopefully the procedure itself, and the aftermath.

Good luck!
I've heard of 20 year old women getting a tubal (even more difficult than a vasectomy, I heard), so it should be possible to find a doctor who will do it. It's still ridiculous that you actively have to search for one though!

Ok...that was quick and painless! Such a shock! First one out of the gate and one of the highest rated in my area!
email to doc: Good afternoon,
I was wondering before I called to make an appointment for consultation, if there were any requirements a patient has to meet before being considered for this procedure. I am often told that unmarried men without children would not be considered for this procedure regardless of their will or commitment to a child-free lifestyle. I am 29 years old, unmarried, and have made the decision to be child-free many, many years ago. I would like to ensure that I remain so without any risk of an "accident" and am coming to you for help. I have already contacted Aetna, my insurance provider, and was informed that this procedure is covered with a $100 deductible. Please let me know if you would be willing to meet with me and possibly perform this procedure. Thank you for your time.
Email from doc: Of course I would be. As a consenting adult, the decision is yours. My obligation is to provide you with informed consent. Give me a call. We take aetna. Dr S

Good luck! It took me four years, from age 17 to 21, to find a doctor willing to perform my tubal - until I finally went to planned parenthood, and was scheduled for surgery within two months. It's ridiculous what a young person has to go through for such a simple straightforward procedure.

I'm really stoked for this. I just have to wait until I'm off my current meds for my strep throat and ear infection then I'll be ready to make the leap!

Good for you! Glad it was so easy. From what I've heard, it does seem easier for a young man to get sterilized than it is for a young woman.

If this doesn't work out, then lie.
I would.

I know its been a while...but I've of course been badgered by those who say "you'll regret this" blah blah blah.
Appointment is set for next Wednesday. Wish me luck! I'm so nervous!

Noregrets, don't be nervous. Everyone says it's easy. You'll be fine. We'll sit with you while you convalesce, which won't take long!

LOL, thanks guys I appreciate the support. It's funny how complete strangers are more supportive than those who have known me for years.
This Wed I believe is just a consultation...I still have to schedule the actual surgery.

Good luck! I'm so happy you didn't have trouble finding a doc to do it! I was terrified that I was going to have to look all over for a gyno that would do my tubal, but I lucked out like you and the first one I went to did it. Its so nice when they accept your decision and don't put up a fight... lol Don't be too nervous. Everything will be fine. And just think how happy and relieved you'll be afterward!

Update:
Saw the doc today. REALLY nice guy. He made sure I was aware of the seriousness of this procedure and that while he may not personally agree with it, he feels an obligation to honor the desires of an adult regardless of age or marital status. Kudos to the man for realizing that no one has the right to make a decision for someone else...that we are responsible for our own destiny.
I have to admit, I was really nervous going in. Regardless of how I feel about this decision, they are still manipulating my yam bag which in and of itself makes me squeamish. My appointment is set for 8/8/08.
Today was basic questions...family history, std's, drug use. Then the FUN part (shudder). "Ok drop trow and lie back". *gasp!*. Did it, and kept my eyes closed the whole time...I wouldn't even look at what he was doing...just felt so wrong. While he poked, prodded, and rolled my marbles around in his hand ever so gently, I felt a wash of reality come over me. This is it, I'm really doing this! Fear turned to excitement and anticipation of finally being able to take the bullets out of the gun and ensure the future that I want for myself. I'll finally be able to begin the next chapter in my life, and end the ever lasting arguments that comes with saying I chose a child-free lifestyle.
For over 10 years I have been saying I do not want children...in a week I'll finally be able to say I'm free.

You haven't listened to opie and anthony...they were the the first to coin that phrase (at least I think so anyway). They are really funny.
Well I found out that my sis is moving on the 9th, so I'm going to have to reschedule. Can't do it the week after because my best friends' 30th is that Saturday. Looks like it will be the 22nd.
